Setup Methods
Singaporean Mehtod (UGF Box)
Favored by Singaporean breeders. A UGF (underground filter) is put at the bottom of a box and covered with sponge and soil. The purpose of this box is to circulate water through the filter media (sponge and soil) which helps lower the PH of the tank.
One of the merits of this method is that you can leave the bottom of the tank bare or with a thin layer of soil, because the water is buffered by the UGF box.
Japanese Method (Thick Soil)
Reset Basket
I don't know who originally came up with this method, because it seems like it has been around for a while. However, the name Reset Basket seems to have been coined by the breeder(?) Shrimp Sanctuary. Before I realized that this was a method, however, I used to pour soil into the back of my hob filters to help buffer the water, so in that regard I think the method has been around for ages, just without anybody giving it a dedicated name.
